International standards in energy management
Energy audits
I am chairing the CEN/CENELEC Joint Working Group writing a new European standard on energy
"audits" (in the sense of surveys or assessments in pursuit of
energy-saving project opportunities).
We are starting with a preliminary state-of-the-art study inviting input from
around the world. You can
view the ongoing work and submit comments
on anything you see, which I would encourage you to do.
I would like to acknowledge the contribution of the Energy Services and
Technology Association who have kindly funded the early stages of research
and drafting.

Energy management systems
BS EN 16001,
the new European standard for management systems for energy, was
published on 1st July 2009. Five out of the six organisations that volunteered
to pilot this standard found it helpful because it imposes a degree of
discipline and continuity that is sometimes lacking even in well-developed
energy programmes; and it gives greater corporate visibility and commitment.
There is even a possibility that compliance might count as an early-action metric
in the Carbon Reduction Casino.
BS EN 16001 introduces the idea of an "energy aspect". Have a look at
this article for an explanation.
