Note from John Herbert of EnergyLAB in Hong Kong

I read your lighting page

I could add some observations based on my experience:

1) Don't control all the external lighting from the same switch/circuit as internal lighting

2) Don't controlling ALL the external lighting from one switch;

3) Using multiple switches provide means for local feedback/monitoring of external lighting/circuits to help stop the operators just switching on all lights on to be safe.

4) I had found more than site here in Asia where the photocell lens was black covered in grime, causing the external lighting to be switched on because it was impossible to reach the photocell without a mechanical lift.If using photocells to control operation of external building lighting, locate the units in a place easy to access for inspection, and clean the cover once in a while.

5) Change lamps incandescent tungsten in Means of Escape (maintained type), Exit signage, and lift lighting to T5 or LED if permitted in your jurisdiction. Ensure that the lift fan and lighting is switched off when the lift is not in use.

6) Provide check-Metering to monitor and record the consumption of the external lighting for each circuit. Circuits might be organized for security lighting, decorative lighting and signage circuits.
